Hemp Seed Side Effects Should Not Be Ignored: Understanding the Contraindications Makes Use Safer
Hemp seed is the dried, mature fruit of the Cannabis plant in the Moraceae family. Sweet in taste and neutral in nature, it enters the spleen, stomach and large intestine meridians, and is a commonly used lubricating laxative herb in traditional Chinese medicine, mainly used to address blood deficiency with depleted fluids and dry-intestine constipation. Although it is a common material used both as medicine and food, hemp seed also has side effects, and these deserve particular attention when it is taken in excess or over a long period.
In terms of common reactions, after taking an excessive amount, some people may experience gastrointestinal reactions such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain, and may also have discomfort such as dizziness, dry mouth and fatigue. If hemp seed that has not been properly processed or has been stored improperly is consumed by mistake, more obvious neurological symptoms may occur when the intake is excessive; in that case, use should be stopped immediately and medical attention sought as soon as possible.
As for contraindications by population, people with spleen-stomach deficiency cold or frequent loose stools and diarrhea should not take hemp seed, otherwise diarrhea symptoms are likely to worsen. Pregnant women, people with weak constitutions, and those taking other medications should preferably consult a physician before use to avoid interactions. Children and older adults have relatively weaker tolerance, so the dose should also be reduced and used cautiously, and they should not take it on their own over the long term.
In terms of use, hemp seed is often combined with other intestine-lubricating herbs. When taken alone, the dosage should be strictly controlled, following medical advice or the product instructions. If obvious discomfort occurs during use, it should be stopped promptly and the situation observed; if symptoms persist or worsen, medical attention must be sought promptly. As long as it is used short-term for the appropriate indication at the standard dosage, hemp seed's laxative effect can still be brought into play well.
