To grow osmanthus, choose the right soil and light, and with proper care it will fill the air with fragrance year after year
Osmanthus is an evergreen small tree or shrub of the genus Osmanthus in the family Oleaceae, and it is also one of China's traditional famous flowers. Although its flowers are small, their fragrance is very rich. Besides being grown for ornament, they are often used to make osmanthus tea, osmanthus cake and osmanthus wine, so it offers both ornamental and practical value.
The commonly cultivated varieties fall mainly into four groups: golden osmanthus, silver osmanthus, orange osmanthus and four-season osmanthus. Golden osmanthus has golden-yellow flowers and a fairly strong fragrance; silver osmanthus has whiter flowers and an elegant, understated character; orange osmanthus has orange-red flowers and is the most eye-catching; four-season osmanthus can bloom several times a year, but its fragrance is relatively mild. Before planting, you can choose a suitable variety according to its intended use and the local climate.
When growing osmanthus, the first thing is to choose a good site. It likes a warm, humid climate with plenty of light, and is suited to loose, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil; in low-lying, waterlogged spots the roots rot easily. Transplanting is usually done in spring or autumn, and moving plants with a soil ball makes it easier for them to survive. For routine watering, follow the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry between waterings. Apply fertilizer appropriately during the growing season; supplementing with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer before flowering helps promote blooming, while in winter you should restrict water and stop fertilizing. Pruning is best done after flowering, cutting out dead branches, overly dense branches and leggy shoots to keep the canopy well ventilated and exposed to light.
A common problem in cultivation is producing only leaves and no flowers, which is mostly related to insufficient light, too much nitrogen fertilizer or improper pruning; you can adjust your care methods to improve it gradually. When ventilation is poor, pests such as scale insects and red spider mites are also more likely to occur, so they need to be spotted early and dealt with promptly. As long as the environment is suitable and management is proper, osmanthus will grow vigorously and fill the air with fragrance year after year.
