The Fuji apple is a late-maturing apple variety widely cultivated around the world today. It originated in Japan and was bred by crossing the Ralls Janet and Red Delicious varieties. It is popular for its crisp, sweet flesh, abundant juice, rich flavor and good storability, and has been introduced and cultivated in many countries. Among the main apple varieties grown in China, the Fuji line accounts for a very large proportion.

Fuji apple production areas in China are mainly concentrated in two advantaged production regions: the Bohai Bay Rim and the Loess Plateau. Large-scale plantings are found in Yantai, Shandong; Luochuan, Shaanxi; Jingning, Gansu; Liaoning; Shanxi; Hebei; and Aksu, Xinjiang, among other places. Most of these production areas have ample sunshine and large day-night temperature differences, which favor sugar accumulation and coloring in the fruit and are key conditions for producing high-quality apples. Among them, the Loess Plateau production area has a higher altitude and deep soil layers, giving the fruit good skin color; the coastal production areas have a humid climate, and the fruit is full of water with a fresh, sweet flavor.

Fuji apples from different production areas differ slightly in appearance and taste, but when selecting them you can always check whether the fruit shape is well formed, whether the color is bright, and whether the flesh is firm. Fuji is a late-maturing variety, and the harvest period is mostly in autumn. After a short period of storage, the flavor of the fruit often becomes even richer.

Fuji apples are suitable both for fresh eating and for long-distance transport and long-term storage, making them one of the varieties with the longest supply period on the market. For home storage, they can be kept in a cool, ventilated place or refrigerated in the fridge. Be careful not to store them together with ripening fruits such as bananas, so that the crisp, sweet texture can be better maintained.
