Bergamot is an evergreen plant of the genus Citrus in the family Rutaceae, named for its fruit, whose tip splits open in a shape resembling outstretched fingers, and it offers ornamental, medicinal and edible value. What is commonly called the bergamot price on the market usually refers to the trading quotations for fresh fruit, dried slices, potted plants and processed products in the distribution chain, and these vary considerably between different forms.

Judging by market conditions, the bergamot price is mainly affected by origin, quality and the relationship between supply and demand. When supplies from the main producing areas are plentiful, the market is relatively stable; in the event of a poor harvest or an off-season for coming to market, prices tend to rise; fruit with an intact shape, well-extended fingers and a golden-yellow colour is of a higher grade, and its selling price is generally higher than that of ordinary goods.

The price structure differs for different specifications. Fresh fruit is mostly sold graded by size and appearance, medicinal dried slices are judged by slice thickness and degree of dryness, while for potted plants the plant shape, fruit load and tree age matter, and their market prices are often higher than fresh fruit of the same period. The prices of deeply processed products such as essential oil also carry the added costs brought by extraction technology and purity.

It should be noted that the bergamot price follows the market, and quotations vary from place to place, so before buying it is advisable to compare prices from several sources and confirm the supply channel. If it is to be used medicinally or for processing, attention should be paid to fruit maturity and the drying process; if it is to be kept as an ornamental potted plant, the value for money should be judged comprehensively in light of how difficult it is to care for, rather than focusing only on a low price while ignoring quality.
