Propolis Prices Vary Widely: Understand the Influencing Factors Before Buying
Propolis is a gummy substance that bees make by collecting resin from plant buds and tree trunks and mixing it with their own secretions. Bee colonies often use it to repair their hives and ward off invading pathogens. Because the raw materials come from scattered sources and the processing involves many steps, the prices of propolis products on the market have long varied considerably, and it is not uncommon for products of the same specification to differ several times in price.
There are three main factors affecting the price of propolis. First, the origin of the raw material: Brazilian green propolis, domestic poplar-type propolis and other raw materials from different sources already differ in procurement cost. Second, the content of active ingredients: products with a higher content of flavonoids and more mature purification processes usually cost more. Third, the product form: raw propolis, propolis liquid, propolis soft capsules and other forms differ in processing depth, and their pricing logic differs accordingly.
It should be noted that propolis is a bee product with a relatively long processing chain. Untreated raw propolis cannot be eaten directly; it must be purified and freed of impurities and heavy metals before it can be made into a finished product. When buying, do not focus only on whether the price is high or low. An excessively low price often means adulterated raw materials or insufficient active ingredients. Cases of passing off poplar resin as propolis do occur from time to time; such fakes cost extremely little, yet are very hard to tell apart by appearance.
Consumers are advised to buy products with a health food approval number through proper channels. When comparing, focus on the flavonoid content per unit of product and the actual net content, work out the unit price, and then compare, rather than looking only at the price of the whole box. Also check the production date and storage conditions; propolis products should be kept away from light and sealed. Only with reasonable expectations about the price of propolis is it easier to buy a product that is genuine and worth the money.
