Egg-type quail are a type of quail kept mainly for egg production, a specialized strain developed from the domestic quail (Coturnix japonica) through long-term selective breeding. They are small in size, reach sexual maturity early, start laying soon, and have outstanding egg-laying performance, making them one of the more widely raised specialty economic poultry species today.

As for breeds, common egg-type quail include the Korean quail, the Japanese quail, and the White-feathered quail developed domestically. Among them, the White-feathered quail has pure white plumage, is easy to sex, and performs consistently in laying, making it popular with many breeders. Different breeds differ slightly in body weight, egg weight and plumage color, so breeders can choose a suitable breed based on local climate conditions and market conditions.

Egg-type quail are mostly raised in stacked-layer cages, which makes daily management easier and saves space. During the brooding stage, attention should be paid to keeping warm and ventilating; after entering the laying period, sufficient light duration must be ensured and feed with a higher protein content provided. At the same time, the environment should be kept quiet to avoid stress factors such as flock panic, which can otherwise easily lead to a drop in the laying rate.

Egg-type quail are characterized by occupying little space, high feed conversion efficiency and fast capital turnover, making them suitable both for farmers to raise on a small scale in their yards and for intensive production. Although quail eggs are small, they are highly nutritious and in stable demand on the market. For beginners who want to try raising specialty poultry, egg-type quail are a fairly ideal choice to start with.
