Plantain is a common herbaceous plant of the genus Plantago in the family Plantaginaceae, and it can be found along field edges, roadsides, ditch banks and wasteland in most parts of China. Its leaves are ovate and grow flat to the ground in a rosette, and in summer and autumn it sends up a spike inflorescence and produces tiny seeds, commonly known as plantain seeds. Both the whole plant and the seeds can be used as medicine, making it one of the more widely used wild medicinal herbs in traditional Chinese medicine.

From a medicinal point of view, plantain is cold in nature and sweet in taste, and it is traditionally considered to have effects such as clearing heat and promoting urination, resolving phlegm and relieving cough, and cooling the blood and detoxifying, and it is often used in combinations for difficult urination, edema, cough with copious phlegm, and damp-heat diarrhea and dysentery. The seeds are especially noted for promoting water metabolism and treating strangury, and for clearing the liver and improving eyesight. However, how exactly it should be used should be guided by a Chinese medicine practitioner based on pattern differentiation, and it is not advisable to take it on one's own in large amounts over a long period; those with deficiency-cold of the spleen and stomach should be especially cautious.

In modern life, besides being used as medicine, plantain is often made into herbal tea, medicinal dishes or topical washes, and in some areas the tender leaves can be eaten as a wild vegetable after blanching. Harvesting is mostly done around the flowering period, when the whole plant is taken, washed, sun-dried and stored for later use. When gathering it, avoid roadsides with frequent traffic and areas that have been sprayed with pesticides, so as not to bring in contaminants.

It should be noted that although plantain is common, its medicinal use requires matching the right condition and the right dosage, and pregnant women and people with special constitutions should consult a professional physician before use. When gathering it in the wild, also take care to distinguish it from poisonous weeds of similar appearance, to avoid mistakenly picking and eating them, and to ensure safety.
