Cactus flowers are the blooms produced by cactus plants, generally emerging from the areoles on the stem segments. The colors are very rich, with yellow, red, pink and white being common, and some varieties have large, showy flowers with high ornamental value. Many people assume cacti only grow spines and never bloom, but in fact, as long as the plant is mature and cared for properly, you can enjoy beautiful flowers at home too.

The opening of cactus flowers is closely tied to light; most bloom on sunny days with plenty of sunshine, while they often stay closed on cloudy and rainy days. Flowering is mostly concentrated in the warm season, with slight differences among varieties: some flowers last only a day or two, others can persist for many days, and a few varieties habitually open in the evening or at night. Flower shapes are also quite varied, with funnel-shaped and bell-shaped forms being common, and the size differs noticeably from variety to variety.

If you want your cactus to bloom successfully, light is the primary requirement. In daily care it should be placed in a sunny spot such as a balcony or windowsill; long-term shade easily leads to leggy growth with no flowers in sight. Watering should follow the principle of not watering until the soil is dry, and watering thoroughly when you do. A sandy soil with good drainage is best. During the peak growing season, you can appropriately supplement with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer and apply less nitrogen fertilizer, so as to avoid excessive leafy growth that hinders flower bud formation.

Besides being grown for their own flowers, cacti are also commonly used as grafting rootstock. Many hobbyists graft plants of the cactus family, such as Christmas cactus, onto them, since they have good compatibility and a relatively high survival rate. If your cactus at home has been grown for years without ever blooming, it is most likely related to insufficient light, overwatering, or the plant not yet being mature. After patiently adjusting your care methods, the situation can usually improve gradually.
