Which cactus plants can safely overwinter outdoors in the north or below 5°C? Most cactus plants can safely overwinter above 0°C and below 5°C, but there is one prerequisite: we must cut off water in advance so they can make it through winter safely.

I grow a lot of cacti and cactus balls. They used to be placed on my balcony. The lowest nighttime temperature on the balcony sometimes dropped below 0°C. But after I cut off water, they all made it through winter safely. What does cutting off water mean? It means stopping watering after Frost's Descent. Keeping the potting soil dry, that is what cutting off water means. When the temperature reaches above 5°C, you can water them again.

The purpose of cutting off water is to let them go dormant. When the temperature drops, cut off water and let them feel it. With no water supply, they will enter dormancy. They conserve energy. As long as the temperature does not stay below zero for a long time, they will not freeze into a popsicle. When spring comes and flowers bloom next year, watering will make them grow. This is a unique characteristic of cacti.

If they are outdoors and the temperature is not below 0°C, there is still one more thing to note: most varieties of cactus plants are most afraid of frost. Cacti and cactus balls, if hit by frost, their entire bodies will rot! You must put them in a place sheltered from frost.
