Potted aquatic plants is a general term for plants that can grow normally in a container water environment and have a certain ornamental value. Unlike ordinary soil-grown plants, they rely on water for moisture and nutrients, and are often used to accent balconies, courtyards and indoor water features; their overall style is elegant, and caring for them has its own special pleasure.

There are quite a few common types. Bowl lotus and water lilies are typical representatives, with strong ornamental value when in bloom; copper coin grass, umbrella plant and sweet flag win by their leaves, grow vigorously and are relatively suitable for beginners; purple loosestrife, pickerelweed and the like are mostly used in slightly larger water vats or courtyard water features. Different plants have quite different requirements for water depth; some prefer deep water, while others are only suitable for shallow-water planting, so it is best to understand this clearly before buying.

In terms of daily care, most potted aquatic plants like ample light, and they tend to grow better placed on a sunny balcony or windowsill. The water should be kept clean; if the water becomes cloudy, change it promptly, and pay even more attention when summer temperatures are high. For fertilizing, slow-release fertilizer or special hydroponic fertilizer is generally used, and the amount should not be too much, so as not to damage the roots or cause the water quality to deteriorate.

Many people worry that still water easily breeds mosquitoes, but in fact changing the water frequently, keeping the water surface clean, or keeping a few small fish in the container often provides a clear suppressive effect. Before winter arrives, varieties with poor cold tolerance should be moved indoors for warmth, while perennial root types can be pruned appropriately and will overwinter safely. As long as you master the key points of light, water quality and temperature, potted aquatic plants are not difficult to grow.
