A flower bud is the developmental stage a flower goes through before it opens, when structures such as the petals and sepals have not yet expanded and are wrapped by outer scales or bracts, giving the whole a compact appearance. During this period the flower tissues are tender and rather sensitive to changes in temperature, humidity and moisture, making it one of the more delicate stages in a flower's growth.

From the perspective of the developmental process, a flower bud generally goes through several stages: bud emergence, swelling, color showing and finally opening. The bud forms of different plants differ noticeably; some are slender like a pen tip, while others are plump and nearly spherical. Taking orchids as an example, the color, vein patterns and other features of the outer bracts of the bud are often used by enthusiasts to guess the future flower color and petal type, and there is a folk saying about judging flowers by their buds.

Care during the bud stage directly affects whether the plant can bloom successfully. At this stage the environment should be kept as stable as possible, avoiding frequent moving of the pot or sudden changes in placement; when watering, prevent water from accumulating inside the bud for long periods, which could cause rot; at the same time, maintain suitable humidity and good ventilation. Fertilization should be light, as strong fertilizer can easily damage the tender flower tissues.

The most common problem in care is buds turning black, shriveling or dropping prematurely, commonly known as bud drop, which is mostly related to a sudden drop in humidity, temperature fluctuations, improper watering and fertilizing, or damaged roots. When abnormal buds are found, first check the environment and the condition of the roots, then adjust management accordingly, creating stable conditions for the buds to develop normally.
