Sticky insect boards trap pests by color; used scientifically, they work well

Sticky insect boards are a common physical pest-control tool, usually made by coating both sides of a rigid board with adhesive. Their principle is to exploit the tendency of many flying insects to move toward specific colors, luring pests onto the board surface where they are held fast, thereby reducing the pest population, with no spraying and no pesticide residue.

By color, sticky insect boards fall mainly into two types: yellow boards and blue boards. Aphids, whiteflies, leaf miners and the small flies commonly seen around flower pots generally prefer yellow, so yellow boards are the most widely used; blue boards are mainly aimed at thrips. In vegetable greenhouses, orchards and orchid-growing flower houses, you can often see them hung above the plants doing their job.

Height matters when using them; generally the board surface should be level with or slightly above the crop's growing point, and the hanging density can be adjusted flexibly according to the pest situation. Once the board surface is covered with insects or dust, its stickiness drops noticeably and it needs to be replaced promptly, otherwise the trapping effect will be compromised. For home gardeners troubled by fungus gnats, a small sticky insect board inserted beside the pot can also help with control.

Sticky insect boards are inexpensive and easy to use, and they can also serve as a window for pest monitoring: by looking at how many insects are on the board and what kinds they are, you can roughly judge how serious the infestation is. However, they mainly deal with flying adults and have limited effect on larvae and eggs hidden in the soil or on the undersides of leaves, so it is best to use them together with routine practices such as ventilation, humidity control and clearing away dead leaves and withered branches for a more ideal pest-control result.
