The Chinese rose (Rosa chinensis) is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub of the genus Rosa in the family Rosaceae, long known as the queen of flowers and one of China's traditional famous flowers. Its most striking feature is its long blooming period; as long as temperatures are suitable, it can flower almost all year round, which is how it got the names yueji and yueyuehong (monthly red). The flowers come in single and double forms, with colors covering red, pink, yellow, white, purple and various bicolors, and many cultivars also carry a delicate fragrance.

Divided by plant form and use, Chinese roses can be roughly classified into hybrid tea roses, floribunda roses, climbing roses, miniature roses and groundcover roses. Hybrid tea roses have large, upright blooms and are often used as cut flowers; climbing roses have long, slender, flexible canes and are ideal for creating flower walls and arches; miniature roses have a compact form and are very well suited to balcony container growing. Modern rose cultivars have been crossed and selected over a long period and are extremely numerous; beginners can start with varieties that are highly adaptable.

For care, Chinese roses prefer a sunny, well-ventilated environment; when light is insufficient, the branches and leaves tend to grow leggy and flowering decreases. They are best planted in loose, fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, and watering can follow the principle of watering when dry and letting them dry out between waterings, avoiding long-term waterlogging of the potting soil. During the growing season, supplement with fertilizer as appropriate, and promptly cut off spent flowers and weak branches after blooming to encourage another flush of flowers; a pruning in late winter and early spring can also make the plant form fuller.

Chinese roses are relatively prone to pests and diseases. Common diseases include black spot and powdery mildew, while the main insect pests are aphids and red spider mites. Maintaining ventilation and promptly clearing away diseased leaves and fallen leaves can noticeably reduce their occurrence. Besides their ornamental value, Chinese roses are also widely used in urban landscaping, courtyard beautification and cut flower production. Overall, they are highly adaptable and easy to propagate, making them one of the most popular flowers in home gardening.
