Yuanhong is the name of a red-flowered variety group of Chinese orchids (guolan), with corresponding types among both Jianlan (Cymbidium ensifolium) and Chunlan (Cymbidium goeringii).

Yuanhong is a fairly common name in orchid circles, usually referring to Chinese orchid varieties whose flower color is dominated by red tones. It does not refer to one fixed orchid plant; rather, it often appears as part of a specific variety name, for example Zhuangyuan Hong and Xueyuan Hongsu among Jianlan (Cymbidium ensifolium), and Yuanhong Chunlan among Chunlan (Cymbidium goeringii). Therefore, when talking about Yuanhong, it is best to understand it in the context of a specific variety.

Among the Jianlan group, Zhuangyuan Hong is a red lotus-petal variety, with broad, rounded petals and a steady, durable flower color; Xueyuan Hongsu, on the other hand, has the characteristic of a plain-centered flower (suxin), with a clean red tone, giving it an elegant style. Yuanhong Chunlan among the Chunlan blooms with a similarly red-dominated flower color, mostly in early spring. The common points of such varieties are bright red flowers and graceful leaf form, giving them high ornamental value.

In terms of care, Yuanhong varieties have requirements similar to those of ordinary Chinese orchids: they like loose, breathable, slightly acidic growing media, which can be mixed from bark with granular materials such as zhijinshi (orchid stone). Place them in a spot with scattered light in daily care, avoid direct exposure to strong sun, and water so that the medium dries before watering again, never allowing water to accumulate in the pot. In summer, pay attention to shading and ventilation; in winter, keep them properly warm; during the peak growing season, apply dilute fertilizer frequently. Once flower buds have formed, try to move the pot as little as possible so as not to affect normal blooming.

It should be noted that Yuanhong is not a single variety, so when buying, you should check the complete variety name and the actual bloom to avoid confusing it with other red orchids. This type of red-flowered orchid symbolizes festivity and is suitable for home orchid growing to accent halls and studies, and is also often given as a gift to relatives and friends. As long as light, water and ventilation are managed well, Yuanhong orchids are not difficult to grow and are worth the time for orchid growers to appreciate slowly.
