Tianyi He is a cultivar known in orchid horticulture for its lotus-petal flowers. It is usually classified within the Chinese cymbidium group and belongs to the lotus-petal flower type in the traditional petal-type aesthetic. In the appraisal system for Chinese orchids, lotus petal refers to a flower shape in which the outer petals are short, round, broad and thick, with a narrowed base and flared corners, resembling lotus petals. Tianyi He is one of the better-known representatives of this petal type.

In terms of ornamental characteristics, cultivars of the lotus-petal type are valued for a round and neat center and full, well-formed petals. The flowers of Tianyi He generally have three broad, rounded outer petals with inward-curving tips, compact inner petals, and a round, regular lip, giving the overall flower a dignified and imposing form; the leaves are mostly semi-arching or slanting upright, thick and glossy. The flowering period is similar to that of Chinese cymbidium, mostly opening in early spring, with a clear, delicate fragrance.

For care, the general methods for Chinese cymbidium can be followed. The potting medium should be loose, breathable and well drained, commonly mixed from bark chunks, Kanuma soil, leaf mold and similar materials. Place it daily in an environment with ample scattered light and good ventilation, avoiding strong direct sunlight. Water by the principle of letting the medium dry before watering again, and avoid water accumulating in the pot. During the growing season, apply dilute fertilizer frequently, and provide appropriate low-temperature vernalization in winter to encourage normal flowering the following year. If leaf tips scorch or roots rot, it is often related to overwatering and poor ventilation, and management should be adjusted promptly.

In the Tianyi series naming, there are also cultivars such as Tianyi Mei Chun Jian. The two reflect the different styles of the plum-petal and lotus-petal types respectively. Appreciating them side by side makes it easier to grasp the interest of Chinese orchid petal-type culture. Because lotus-petal cultivars have full flower forms and an imposing symbolic meaning, they have long been favored by orchid growers. When purchasing, it is advisable to use reliable channels and pay attention to identifying plant condition and cultivar authenticity.
