Geranium is the collective name for plants in the genus Pelargonium of the family Geraniaceae. It is native to southern Africa and is now widely cultivated in many places. Its growth habit is compact, and its leaves are mostly round or kidney-shaped; some varieties have ring-shaped markings on the leaf surface. The flowers open in clusters, resembling hydrangeas, so it is also commonly known among gardeners as the "foreign hydrangea" or "paraffin red."

There are many geranium varieties, with common ones including zonal geranium, regal geranium, scented geranium and ivy geranium. Zonal geranium has horseshoe-shaped markings on its leaves and is a common potted type; regal geranium has larger and more brightly colored flowers; scented geranium leaves carry a distinctive fragrance and can be used to extract essential oils; ivy geranium has soft, trailing stems and is suitable for hanging displays.

Geranium prefers a warm, sunny and well-ventilated environment. It fears both intense summer heat and severe cold, so it needs appropriate shading in summer and should be moved indoors for protection from the cold in winter. Watering should follow the principle of letting the soil dry before watering again; long-term waterlogging in the pot can easily cause root rot. Pinching the growing tips at the right time during the growing season can encourage branching and make the plant fuller, and removing spent flowers promptly after blooming helps it continue to bloom.

Geranium has a long blooming period and rich flower colors, making it suitable for balconies, windowsills and courtyards. Some types can also be used to extract essential oils, giving them both ornamental and economic value. It should be noted that its sap may cause skin discomfort in a small number of people, so it is best to wear gloves when pruning, and people with allergic constitutions at home should avoid prolonged close contact with it.
