The Four-Season Orchid is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Cymbidium in the orchid family, commonly known as Jianlan (Cymbidium ensifolium), and in some regions also called Shilan. It is called the Four-Season Orchid because its blooming period is not limited to a single season; with proper care it can flower several times a year, with the peak blooming period mostly concentrated in summer and autumn. Its leaves are mostly upright or slanted, rather hard and glossy in texture, and when the flowers open the fragrance is delicate and long-lasting, making it a terrestrial orchid species much loved by flower enthusiasts.

The Four-Season Orchid is fairly widely distributed in southern China, with wild or cultivated resources found in Fujian, Guangdong, Sichuan, Taiwan, China and other places. Traditional varieties are quite rich; famous longtime cultivars include Dayebaibai and Lvyun, and flower colors come in different types such as plain-hearted (suxin) and colored-hearted (caixin), while flower forms also cover common petal-type flowers and unusual flowers among other styles, able to satisfy the aesthetic needs of different enthusiasts.

In terms of cultivation, the Four-Season Orchid prefers a warm, humid, well-ventilated semi-shaded environment. The growing medium should be loose, breathable and well-draining; for routine watering, follow the principle of watering when dry and withholding when wet, avoiding long-term water accumulation in the pot that causes root rot. During the peak growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently; light should mainly be bright scattered light, with appropriate shading in summer. Every one or two years, repotting can be combined with division, which helps the plant rejuvenate and sprout new shoots.

The Four-Season Orchid blooms frequently and has excellent fragrance, with moderate care difficulty; it is suitable both for potted ornamental display on balconies and in courtyards, and also often appears at orchid exhibitions and other cultural exchange occasions. Many enthusiasts have encountered the situation where their own Four-Season Orchid does not bloom; this is usually related to insufficient light, lack of nutrients or too small a day-night temperature difference, and after appropriately adjusting the environment most plants can recover their normal blooming rhythm.
