Shucheng Orchid is a traditional orchid-scented green tea produced in Shucheng, Anhui.
Shucheng Orchid is a traditional green tea produced in Shucheng County, Anhui Province, also often called Orchid Tea. It is a representative variety among the orchid teas of western Anhui and has a relatively long history of tea-making in the area. Its name comes partly from the appearance of the dry tea, which closely resembles an orchid bud about to bloom, and partly from the fresh, elegant orchid fragrance the brewed tea carries, which is how it got its name.
Shucheng lies on the remnant ridges of the Dabie Mountains, with many low hills and uplands within its borders. The tea gardens are shrouded in mist and clouds year-round, the air is humid, and the soil is loose and fertile, providing good natural conditions for tea plant growth. Locally, picking usually begins around Grain Rain, mainly taking fresh leaves with one bud and one initial leaf, with an emphasis on tenderness and uniformity in picking, laying the foundation for later quality.
In terms of quality, Shucheng Orchid has curled strips in appearance and a glossy emerald green color. After brewing, the liquor is tender green and bright, the orchid fragrance is lofty and lasting, the taste is fresh and mellow with a sweet aftertaste, and the brewed leaves are tender, even and whole. Good-quality orchid tea has a natural aroma without any stale or mixed notes, feels gentle on the palate with little bitterness or astringency, and also has fairly good staying power across infusions.
When brewing, it is best to use a glass cup or a white porcelain lidded bowl. The water temperature should not be too high; you can let boiling water cool slightly before pouring it in, so as not to scald the tender buds. For daily storage, pay attention to sealing, keeping it away from light, protecting it from moisture and preventing odors. When the temperature is high, it can be refrigerated, and after taking some out, reseal it promptly to keep the orchid fragrance fresh and lasting.
