Characteristics and Care Methods of the Eighteen Scholars Cymbidium sinense Wonder Flower
Eighteen Scholars is a traditional wonder-flower variety among Chinese orchids, and it is most commonly seen in Cymbidium sinense. Its name borrows from the ancient allusion of the Eighteen Scholars, suggesting elegance and rarity. The most striking feature of this type of orchid is that its flowers have many petals and many lips, often reaching more than ten petals or even more, far exceeding the form of ordinary orchids with one to two whorls of petals, so it is classified as a wonder flower.
When it blooms, its petals cluster together in layers, and the flower form is full with a strong sense of depth; a single flower already has considerable ornamental weight. Cymbidium sinense Eighteen Scholars usually blooms in winter and spring, has a relatively long flowering period, and carries a delicate fragrance. It has long been a highlight variety at orchid exhibitions and is also deeply loved by collector-type orchid enthusiasts.
In terms of care, Eighteen Scholars is similar in habit to ordinary Cymbidium sinense. It likes a warm, humid, well-ventilated environment and is best placed in a spot with diffused light. The growing medium should be loose, breathable, and well draining; a mix of bark, Kanuma soil, and similar materials can be used. Watering should follow the principle of letting the medium dry before watering again, avoiding long-term water accumulation in the pot that can cause root rot. During the growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently. In summer, pay attention to shading; in winter, reduce watering and maintain an appropriate temperature.
It should be noted that among orchids there are many variety names containing the word Scholar, such as Grand Scholar among Cymbidium goeringii, and they belong to different orchid species from Eighteen Scholars and are not the same flower. The same variety may also not be called exactly the same in different production areas. When purchasing, you can identify it comprehensively by combining leaf posture, flower color, and petal type, and try to buy through reliable channels.
