June Snow Bonsai Care Tips and Ornamental Features
June Snow bonsai is made from June Snow (Serissa japonica), an evergreen small shrub of the madder family. June Snow, also known as Bai Magu or Mantianxing, has fine, dense branches and leaves and a low, compact tree form. When it blooms in early summer each year, its tiny white flowers cover the branches so densely that from a distance they look like accumulated snow, which is how June Snow got its name.
Common cultivated varieties include golden-edged June Snow, silver-edged June Snow and double-flowered June Snow; types with patterned leaf margins or double flowers each have their own ornamental appeal. Because its branches are supple and its sprouting ability is strong, it is often shaped by pruning and wiring into styles such as forest style, exposed-root style and waterside style, evoking a sense of grandeur in miniature and appearing very elegant.
In terms of care, June Snow prefers a warm, humid, semi-shaded environment and dislikes harsh sun exposure. Its cold tolerance is moderate, so in winter it should be moved indoors or to a sheltered, sunny spot. Water according to the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry between waterings, keeping the potting soil moist but not waterlogged; during the peak growing season, a dilute liquid fertilizer can be added as appropriate. It tolerates pruning well, so pinch out the growing tips and remove buds promptly to maintain a compact, attractive tree shape.
June Snow bonsai offers both form and flower appeal and is suitable for placing on a balcony, in a courtyard or on a desk in the living room, adding a touch of natural charm to the home environment. Its adaptability and sprouting ability are both strong, and shaping it is not difficult, making it one of the easier introductory species for bonsai enthusiasts.
