The price of orchids is closely tied to the variety and the condition of the seedlings
The price of orchids refers to the level of the selling price when orchids are traded on the market, and the gap between different varieties is very large. Common, ordinary varieties are relatively affordable, while some rare and famous varieties can be very expensive; this difference mainly stems from the scarcity of the variety and the level of its ornamental value.
There are quite a few factors that affect orchid prices. First is the variety itself; traditional famous varieties and newly collected wild orchids are few in number, so their prices tend to be higher than those of ordinary varieties propagated in large quantities. Second is the flower quality; plants with well-formed petals and distinctive flower colors are more welcomed by the market, and the traits described by terms such as plain flowers and colored flowers often directly influence pricing. In addition, the strength of the seedling growth, the number of seedlings, and whether they come with flowers or buds all likewise affect the final transaction price.
From the market perspective, orchids can be broadly divided into two categories: consumer grade and collector grade. Consumer-grade orchids are mainly for ornamental decoration, their prices are relatively stable, and they are suitable for ordinary households to buy. Collector-grade orchids are concentrated in categories such as famous varieties and variegated-leaf orchids; their prices fluctuate noticeably with market conditions, and sometimes they swing widely due to speculation, so you need to judge calmly before buying.
For beginners, there is no need to pursue only high-priced varieties when buying orchids. When introducing plants, you should give priority to strong seedlings; strong seedlings have well-developed root systems and better resistance, with higher survival rates and higher rates of producing new growths, making them more cost-effective in the long run. At the same time, you should understand basic orchid terminology and market conditions, look and compare more, and avoid paying unnecessary costs due to information asymmetry.
