Cymbidium ensifolium is an important category among Chinese cymbidiums. It got its name because it was historically produced in large quantities in the Fujian area, and it is also popularly called the four-season orchid. Together with Cymbidium goeringii, Cymbidium faberi and Cymbidium sinense, it belongs to the terrestrial orchids. It is mainly distributed in the warm and humid mountainous areas of southern China, has a long history of cultivation, and is one of the representative categories in traditional orchid-appreciation culture.

Cymbidium ensifolium has strap-shaped leaves that are relatively thick in texture with a glossy surface, and the overall plant form is upright and elegant. Its most prominent feature is that its flowering period is concentrated in summer and autumn; with proper care it can bloom several times a year, and one scape often bears several to more than ten flowers. Flower colors range from yellow-green to those with purple-red markings, and the fragrance is delicate and subtle. Among them, pure-color varieties whose flowers have no mixed colors are especially favored by orchid enthusiasts; Tiegu Su, Longyan Su and others are relatively widely circulated old varieties.

In terms of care, Cymbidium ensifolium likes a warm, semi-shaded environment with good ventilation, and it fears exposure to scorching sun and water accumulation in the pot. The growing medium should be loose and breathable; materials such as bark and granular soil are best given secondary treatment before use to remove dust and impurities. Problems are most likely to occur during periods of high temperature and high humidity in summer, when root suffocation and stem rot often happen, so watering should be properly controlled and ventilation strengthened. When dividing plants or introducing new ones, it is advisable to select strong seedlings, and the cut wounds should be dried and healed before potting to reduce infection by pathogens.

Overall, Cymbidium ensifolium is among the easier Chinese cymbidiums to grow and relatively easy to bring into flower, making it suitable for beginners. Its leaf posture is elegant and its floral fragrance is pleasant; it can be placed on a balcony or in a courtyard for viewing, and it also has a certain cultural and collectible value, having long been deeply loved by orchid enthusiasts in many places.
