An Introduction to Common Orchid Varieties: Characteristics and Care Methods
Orchids are the collective term for plants in the family Orchidaceae and are one of China's traditional famous flowers, often grouped with plum, bamboo and chrysanthemum as the Four Gentlemen. They are known for their understated flower colors and delicate fragrance, with long, graceful leaves and an elegant plant form, and have long been favored by flower growers.
From a horticultural perspective, orchids of the genus Cymbidium such as Chunlan (Cymbidium goeringii), Huilan (Cymbidium faberi), Jianlan (Cymbidium ensifolium), Molan (Cymbidium sinense) and Hanlan (Cymbidium kanran) are often collectively called Chinese orchids. Within orchid appreciation circles, orchids are also divided by flower color into plain flowers and colored flowers; plain flowers have petals that are pure with no mixed colors, while colored flowers carry vivid hues. The two have different focuses for appreciation, and enthusiasts often choose their preferred lines according to their own tastes.
The key to growing orchids lies in the potting medium and the environment. The medium should be loose, breathable and well drained; disinfecting or secondarily treating it before use can reduce residual pathogens and lower the risk of root rot. Watering should follow a wet-dry cycle, avoiding long-term waterlogging in the pot, while also ensuring smooth air circulation around the plant.
Summer's high temperatures and high humidity make it a peak period for problems such as soft rot and stem rot in orchids, so extra care must be taken to provide shade, lower temperatures and control humidity. Wounds left from division or pruning should be treated promptly and allowed to dry and heal before repotting, which can reduce pathogen invasion. When introducing new seedlings, choose robust plants with intact leaves and strong roots, and they will establish and grow more smoothly afterward.
Orchids are not only ornamental but also carry rich cultural symbolism, often regarded as a symbol of noble character, and related fables are widely circulated among the people. As long as you master the basic elements of potting medium, water and ventilation, ordinary households can also grow orchids full of vitality.
