Aloe ferox, also known as Cape aloe or bitter aloe, is a large species in the genus Aloe. It is native to the Cape region of South Africa and gets its name from its widespread distribution around the Cape of Good Hope. Its plant form is tall and stately, and mature plants can grow into tree-like shapes several meters high, making it quite recognizable within the aloe family.

In appearance, the leaves of Aloe ferox are thick and juicy, lance-shaped, with hard small spines along the leaf margins and surface, and the leaf color is mostly grayish green to dark green. The flower stalk is thick and upright, and the flowers are mainly orange-red, densely arranged into cylindrical inflorescences, with a very striking ornamental effect during the flowering period.

In terms of uses, it is one of the more widely used medicinal aloe species worldwide, and the juice in its leaves can be processed into a raw material for traditional medicines and cosmetics. At the same time, because of its upright plant form and bright flower colors, it is also often cultivated as an ornamental plant in courtyards or greenhouses.

When caring for it, Aloe ferox prefers a sunny, warm and dry environment, and fears cold and waterlogging. When low temperatures or frost occur in winter, it should be moved indoors promptly or protected with insulation measures. A loose, breathable, well-drained sandy soil is best. Watering should follow the principle of preferring dry over wet, avoiding long-term moisture in the potting soil, which can cause root rot. Propagation can be done by sowing seeds, or by dividing or cuttings using side shoots that grow from the base. In daily care, attention should also be paid to maintaining ventilation, as long-term stuffy and humid conditions easily lead to root rot and scale insects, which should be dealt with promptly once discovered.
