Fuxin water-grass agate is a variety of agate produced in Fuxin, Liaoning, and is also one of the region's most representative ornamental stones. Inside it are natural patterns resembling water weeds, moss or twigs, and when set off by light, they look as though clumps of water grass are stretching and swaying in clear water; hence the name water-grass agate. Fuxin is rich in agate resources and has a long history of carving, and has long enjoyed the reputation of being the capital of agate.

In terms of how it formed, the main component of agate is silicon dioxide; it is fine and hard in texture and fairly transparent. The so-called water grass is not a real plant; it is generally believed to be branch-like and moss-like inclusions gradually formed during ancient geological activity, when mineral elements such as iron and manganese seeped and stained along fissures. The patterns of every piece of water-grass agate are unique; some are sparse and graceful, others dense as a forest, forming a natural picture.

In terms of appraisal and uses, those with plenty of water head, a clean base and clear, vivid grass shapes are generally considered best, and green is the most common color, though yellow-brown, red-brown and other varieties also exist. Water-grass agate of good quality is often made into bracelets, pendants, seals and carved ornaments, and material with outstanding pictorial appeal is especially favored by collectors, offering both ornamental and handling value.

For daily care, note that although water-grass agate is not low in hardness, it is brittle and afraid of falls, so avoid knocking or dropping it when wearing or storing it. For cleaning, use a soft cloth dipped in clean water and wipe gently; keep it away from perfume and chemical detergents as much as possible, and do not expose it to prolonged sun or high-temperature environments. When not wearing it, it is best to wrap it separately in a soft cloth for storage to prevent scratching against hard objects.
