A Detailed Guide to Growing Lucky Bamboo: Master Both Water and Soil Cultivation Techniques
Lucky bamboo is not a true bamboo, but an evergreen foliage plant of the genus Dracaena. Its stems are upright and its leaves are elegant, and it carries the auspicious meaning of rising step by step, so it is often placed in living rooms, studies or offices. This plant is robust by nature and has low light requirements, making it a very suitable indoor green plant for beginners.
Water cultivation is the most common method. Choose healthy stems, cut the base at a slant to increase the water-absorbing area, and insert them into clean water, with the water level just covering the bottom section; it does not need to be too deep. Before rooting, change the water frequently, generally replacing it with clean water every two to three days; after rooting, the frequency can be reduced, and when the water level drops you can simply top it up.
During water cultivation, you can add a few drops of liquid fertilizer for hydroponics at intervals, which helps keep the leaves deep green. Lucky bamboo likes bright, indirect light, and the most suitable position is somewhere with light but no direct sun; especially in summer, avoid strong sunlight. In winter, pay attention to cold protection and warmth, as leaves tend to turn yellow and suffer cold damage when the temperature is too low.
If you choose soil cultivation, use loose, fertile, well-drained soil, and usually water thoroughly only after the soil surface dries, avoiding waterlogging that causes root rot. During the growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently, mainly diluted liquid fertilizer. Whether grown in water or soil, the environment should be kept well ventilated and kept away from air-conditioning and heating vents.
In daily care, if the leaves turn yellow, it is mostly related to excessive light, poor water quality or low temperatures; adjusting the position promptly and changing the water usually allows it to recover gradually. As long as the environment is suitable and management is proper, lucky bamboo can stay green all year round, adding a touch of vitality and good fortune to the indoors.
