Are azaleas easy to care for? Master the key care points and azaleas are not hard to grow
Azalea is the collective name for plants of the genus Rhododendron in the family Ericaceae, also known as yingshanhong and shanshiliu, and is one of China's traditional famous flowers, very common in the mountains of the south. Its flower colors are rich, commonly red, pink and white, and its flowering period is mostly concentrated in spring, with high ornamental value.
As for whether it is easy to grow, the azalea is of medium difficulty; it is not the hardest to tend, but it also cannot be managed roughly and carelessly. It has several distinct habits: it likes acidic soil, likes a humid and cool semi-shaded environment, fears waterlogging and strong direct sunlight, and also fears dryness and stuffy heat. When the environment is suitable it grows vigorously, and when the environment is wrong it easily develops yellow leaves and leaf drop.
For care, it is recommended to use loose, breathable acidic leaf mold or peat soil for the potting mix, and some pine needle soil can be mixed in to increase acidity. Water following the principle of watering when dry and stopping when wet; tap water in the north tends to be alkaline, so it is best to let it sit for a few days before use, and acidic fertilizer solution can also be added regularly to prevent the soil from becoming alkaline. The best placement is in a spot with bright scattered light and good ventilation, and attention should be paid to shading in summer.
The yellow leaves commonly seen by beginners are mostly caused by soil that is too alkaline or by iron deficiency, so the water quality and soil pH can be adjusted first. A large amount of leaf drop is usually related to waterlogging, dry air or poor ventilation, and the environment needs to be improved promptly. If it does not bloom for a long time, then check whether the light is sufficient and whether the timing of pruning has affected flower bud formation.
Overall, as long as you understand its habits of liking acid, liking moisture, fearing sun and fearing waterlogging, and arrange the soil, water and light properly, the azalea is not hard to grow, and even beginners can grow it with lush branches and flowers filling the pot.
