Diaojinzhong usually refers to the fuchsia (Fuchsia hybrida), also known as lampion flower or hanging bell begonia. It is a semi-shrub ornamental plant in the genus Fuchsia, family Onagraceae. Its flowers open downward, with a tubular calyx that curls back outward, paired with spreading petals, making them look like little upside-down bells or lanterns, which is how the plant got its name. The flower colors are rich, commonly red, pink, purple and white, and the sepals and petals often form a two-tone combination, giving it strong ornamental appeal. It is well suited to container growing for decorating balconies, windowsills and living rooms.

The fuchsia originates from the mountain regions of Central and South America. It prefers cool, humid and semi-shaded environments, and it fears both scorching sun and high temperatures as well as severe cold. It grows most vigorously when the climate is mild in spring and autumn. In the high heat of summer it easily enters a dormant or semi-dormant state, with leaf drop and bud drop, which is mostly a normal physiological response and no cause for excessive worry.

For care, choose a loose, fertile, slightly acidic soil with good drainage. Water by the principle of letting the soil dry between waterings, and avoid long-term waterlogging in the pot, which causes root rot. During the growing season, apply light fertilizer frequently, mainly dilute liquid fertilizer. Before bud formation and flowering, supplement appropriately with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, which helps flower bud differentiation and blooming. In summer, pay attention to shading and ventilation and reduce water and stop fertilizing. In winter, move it indoors to keep it warm and provide sufficient indirect light.

Propagation is mainly by cuttings, mostly done in spring and autumn. Select robust growing branches and insert them into a moist medium; with warmth and moisture they root fairly easily. In routine management, you can also pinch out the growing tips in good time to encourage the plant to branch more and bloom more. At the same time, watch for pests such as aphids and red spider mites, and deal with them as soon as they are found, so that the fuchsia grows steadily and keeps blooming.
