Orchids are an exceptionally diverse family among the angiosperms, and the familiar Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, Oncidium and Chinese cymbidiums all belong to this group. Most have distinctive flower shapes and long bloom periods; they are important ornamental plants, and some species are also used medicinally, such as Gastrodia elata and Dendrobium.

A typical feature of orchids is their specialized flower structure: one of the petals is often modified into a lip (labellum) that helps attract insect pollinators. Their seeds are as fine as dust, and under natural conditions they usually need symbiotic fungi to germinate. Most orchids grow in tropical and subtropical forests, and many species are epiphytic on tree trunks or rocks, with roots that need a well-aerated environment.

When growing orchids at home, the key is to mimic their original growing environment. Light should be soft, avoiding direct sun; the growing medium should be loose and airy, commonly sphagnum moss, bark or a special orchid mix, and ordinary garden soil should not be used. Water when the medium is dry and let it dry slightly between waterings, and higher air humidity is better for growth. During the growing season, apply dilute fertilizer frequently, and give the plant a proper rest after flowering to encourage reblooming.

Common problems are mostly related to light and water: too little light leads to leggy growth or failure to bloom, while overwatering easily causes root rot. After an orchid blooms, don't rush to throw it away; cut off the spent flowers and care for it normally, and many varieties can bloom again the following year. Besides conventional pot culture, orchids grown in hanging baskets are also very popular, and combined with other trailing plants they can decorate balconies and indoor spaces.
