An Introduction to the Characteristics and Care of the Casablanca Lily
The Casablanca lily is a horticultural variety in the genus Lilium of the family Liliaceae, and it belongs to the better-known group within the Oriental lily series, prized for its large, pure white flowers. In the cut-flower market it is often called the Casablanca lily, and it is one of the common white focal flowers in bridal bouquets and high-end floral arrangements.
In appearance, this flower has a large, spreading form, with petals that are mostly pure white and fairly thick in texture, releasing a rich fragrance when open. The number of flowers per plant is not especially large, but each bloom is very striking, giving an overall impression of dignity and purity, which is why it is often associated with meanings of purity and elegance.
For care, the Casablanca lily prefers a cool, well-ventilated environment and is best planted in loose, well-drained soil. Watering should follow a wet-dry cycle, and standing water in the pot must be strictly avoided, otherwise the bulb is prone to rot. During the growing period, give it ample but soft light, provide some shade during the high heat of summer, and fertilize on the principle of weak but frequent feeds; as the flowering period approaches, a fertilizer higher in phosphorus and potassium can be added.
When used as a cut flower, it can be cut when the flowers first begin to open; removing the anthers helps extend the vase life and also prevents pollen from staining clothing. It should be noted that lilies are toxic to pets such as cats, so they should be placed out of the reach of pets. As long as the environment is suitable and management is proper, it will produce full, pure white blooms and become a highlight in floral arrangements and gardens.
