French marigold (Tagetes patula) is an annual herbaceous plant in the genus Tagetes of the family Asteraceae, native to Mexico, and it is now cultivated in many parts of China. Its flowers are mostly yellow or orange, often marked with reddish-brown patches, and the color combination resembles peacock feathers, which is how it got its name; among the general public it is also known by other names such as small marigold, stinking chrysanthemum, and satin flower.

The plant is generally not tall, with upright stems and many branches, and its leaves are pinnately divided; when rubbed, they give off a distinctive odor. The flowering period is mostly concentrated in summer and autumn, and as long as the temperature is suitable and care is proper, it will keep blooming continuously, producing a very striking ornamental effect when planted in mass.

In terms of care, French marigold likes a sunny, warm environment and has good drought tolerance; it fears waterlogged soil above all. For routine watering, follow the principle of watering when the soil is dry and letting it dry out between waterings, and choosing loose, well-drained soil is more conducive to growth. It grows quickly, is easy to propagate from seed and survive, and seeds that fall to the ground often germinate and sprout on their own the following year, making overall management fairly effortless.

In terms of uses, French marigold is often used in flowerbeds and flower borders, and can also be grown in pots placed on balconies and in courtyards to add bright color to the surroundings. It is a close relative in the same genus as marigold (Tagetes erecta), but its plant form is shorter and its flowers are smaller, so it is not hard to tell them apart when placed together. In addition, there are folk practices of using French marigold medicinally; if there is such a need, it is recommended to do so under the guidance of professionals.
