The Benefits and Symbolism of the Money Tree: Many Advantages to Growing It Indoors
The money tree, botanically known as Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ plant), is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant in the genus Zamioculcas of the family Araceae, native to eastern Africa. It gets its name because its thick, glossy leaves are arranged in pairs and resemble strings of coins. With a neat, compact form that stays green all year round, it brings a fresh, natural look whether placed in a living room, study or office.
When it comes to purifying the air, the money tree has broad, deep green leaves that can absorb some of the dust in the air, helping to a certain extent to improve indoor air quality. It is also fairly shade-tolerant and can grow normally in indoor environments with soft light, making it very suitable for long-term placement in the home.
In terms of symbolism, the money tree has an auspicious name and is often regarded as a symbol of attracting wealth and good fortune, and of continuous good luck. It frequently appears as a gift for business openings and housewarmings, and is also one of the popular Lunar New Year flowers.
Caring for the money tree is generally quite easy. It grows underground tubers that can store water, giving it strong drought tolerance. It should not be watered too frequently; keeping the potting soil on the dry side is actually safer. If the leaves turn yellow and dry up, wilt, or the plant topples over, it is usually related to overwatering, poor ventilation or insufficient light, and the care routine should be adjusted promptly to prevent root rot.
