Grafted osmanthus trees refer to osmanthus seedlings propagated and cultivated by grafting, usually using vigorous seedling rootstock or rootstock such as privet or fringe tree, onto which scions of superior osmanthus varieties are grafted. Compared with raising seedlings from seed, grafted seedlings better preserve the variety characteristics of the mother plant, flower earlier, and have more stable flower color and fragrance, so they are widely used in osmanthus cultivation.

Grafting is mostly carried out in spring when the sap begins to flow and around the time the plant buds, as temperatures rise at this time and the graft union heals faster. Scions should be taken from healthy, pest-free adult osmanthus trees, using plump one-year-old branches; the cut surface should be smooth, and after aligning the cambium with the rootstock, it should be tied tightly, with good moisture retention and shading. After the graft takes, rootstock buds often sprout near the union and should be removed promptly to avoid consuming nutrients.

When planting, osmanthus prefers a warm, humid environment with ample light, and slightly acidic soil that is deep, loose, fertile and well drained. During the growing season, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged; too much watering can easily cause root rot. Fertilization should be light and frequent, and before the flowering period, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer can be added appropriately to help flower bud differentiation and abundant blooming.

In daily care, if leaves become dry and yellow, it is often related to waterlogged root rot, alkaline soil, nutrient deficiency or insufficient light, and the cause can be checked and adjusted step by step according to the specific symptoms. As long as management is done well after the graft takes, the osmanthus tree will grow stronger year by year, with rich floral fragrance in autumn and high ornamental and landscaping value.
