How do you care for an osmanthus tree so it grows well? A full guide to care methods
1. Provide appropriate water
First, water appropriately. Remember the principle of not watering if the soil is not dry, and watering thoroughly when you do. Spray water on the leaf surface every day. In the hot midsummer, you must water in the morning and evening so the plant does not go without water, while in winter water around noon. The water temperature should be close to the soil temperature; do not let it alternate between hot and cold. Note that there must be no standing water in the pot.
2. Replenish fertilizer in time
Fertilize rationally. Since it is grown for viewing its flowers, it should be given ample fertilizer. When new branches appear, apply 1 to 2 applications of urea; after the flower bud initiation stage and before flowering, phosphorus fertilizer should be the main type. Before applying fertilizer, the soil should be somewhat dry; it is best to loosen the soil so the flowers can absorb it better, then water once after a day.
3. Change the pot and soil on time
Every 2 to 3 years, change the pot and prepare some new soil, removing some old roots and withered roots to avoid unnecessary loss of nutrients. At the bottom of the flowerpot, you can place a layer of charcoal cinders or roof tiles to improve ventilation and drainage, and you can add oil-pressing residue cakes as a base fertilizer. When repotting, spread and firm the soil evenly.
4. Prune it into a good shape
Pruning and shaping: shaping generally adopts a method combining fixed shaping and pruning, preferably carried out after autumn. For trees with a poor shape, most of the top branches can be cut off at 2/3 or 3/4 of the height. Plants with too many branches also need thinning. After flowering, old, weak, diseased and dead branches need to be cut off.
5. Care methods for overwintering
Then overwintering management: for overwintering indoors, the suitable temperature should be kept at 0 to 5°C, and humidity should be kept at 50 to 80%. In winter, light exposure indoors is very important, especially in early spring before the buds revive; sufficient sunlight is for moving the potted plant outdoors again after late spring the following year.
