Plants that purify indoor air are ornamental plants that can absorb and metabolize some harmful gases through their leaves and suitably increase the humidity of the surrounding air. These plants have both ornamental and practical value, and are suitable for placement in living rooms, bedrooms, offices and other indoor spaces. It should be noted that a single plant has limited purifying capacity, so it is better used as a supplementary measure alongside opening windows for ventilation.

Common plants that purify indoor air include golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum), spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum), snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata), English ivy (Hedera helix), aloe (Aloe vera), peace lily (Spathiphyllum) and areca palm (Dypsis lutescens). Golden pothos and spider plant are tough and easy to grow, with stems that trail naturally, making them suitable for placement or hanging; snake plant is drought-tolerant and shade-tolerant, and is often placed in bedrooms and other corners with ordinary light. Varieties with more foliage, such as areca palm and peace lily, can also make the air in a room less dry.

When caring for these plants, the key points are light and watering. Most species like bright, indirect light; they should neither be exposed to prolonged direct sun nor kept in dark places for long periods. Water according to the principle of letting the soil dry out between waterings; standing water in the pot easily causes root rot. Regularly wiping the leaf surfaces with a damp cloth keeps them looking good and also helps the leaves breathe normally.

Common problems are mostly related to the care environment. Yellowing leaves and dry leaf tips are often caused by insufficient light, overwatering or dry air, and the plant will gradually recover once adjustments are made in time. Also note that the sap of plants such as golden pothos and dumb cane (Dieffenbachia) is mildly irritating, so if there are young children or pets at home, they should be placed out of reach.
