There are many kinds of air-purifying plants, and keeping a few pots at home or in the office is very practical
Air-purifying plants refer to ornamental plants that can absorb dust through their leaves, take in some harmful gases, and at the same time release oxygen and regulate indoor humidity. Common targets of purification include formaldehyde, benzene and other residual gases from renovation, as well as carbon dioxide and others. However, the effect of a single potted plant is limited; it is better suited as a supplementary measure alongside opening windows for ventilation.
There are many varieties of this kind of plant. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum), spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum), snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata), aloe (Aloe vera), English ivy (Hedera helix), peace lily (Spathiphyllum), rubber plant (Ficus elastica) and Swiss cheese plant (Monstera deliciosa) are all common choices. Among them, pothos and spider plant have branches that droop naturally, making them very suitable for hanging; climbing plants such as English ivy can be trained up a wall to make a flower wall or plant curtain, which is both attractive and increases the leaf surface area. Snake plant and aloe are relatively drought-tolerant and can also release oxygen at night, making them suitable for the bedroom.
In terms of care, most air-purifying plants like bright indirect light; insufficient light tends to cause problems such as failure to bloom, leggy growth and dull leaf colour. Water according to the principle of watering when dry and letting the soil dry out between waterings, and avoid long-term waterlogging in the pot, which causes root rot. When growing plants in the office, also pay attention to direct airflow from air conditioners and dust accumulating on leaves; wiping the leaves regularly with a damp cloth helps maintain the plant's normal respiration and absorption capacity.
It should be noted that the sap of some plants is irritating, such as pothos and dumb cane (Dieffenbachia); when pruning, avoid direct contact between the sap and the skin, and if there are young children or pets at home, place them out of reach. To make the purifying effect more noticeable, you can arrange several varieties together and keep the room frequently ventilated, so that the plants can continue to play their proper role.
