The Hermit of Flowers refers to the chrysanthemum: the origin of this elegant name and its cultural significance
The Hermit of Flowers refers to the chrysanthemum. In traditional Chinese culture, the chrysanthemum, together with the plum blossom, the orchid and the bamboo, is known as one of the Four Gentlemen of Flowers, and has always been a symbol of noble purity and quiet detachment. The reason it earned the elegant name of "hermit" is related to its flowering habits: the chrysanthemum does not compete with the hundred flowers for spring, but instead blooms against the frost in late autumn, carrying a strong sense of withdrawing from the noise and living apart from the world.
The spread of this elegant name is closely tied to the Eastern Jin poet Tao Yuanming. His lines about picking chrysanthemums by the eastern hedge and gazing at the southern mountains in leisure bound the chrysanthemum tightly to a life of rural reclusion. After that, the chrysanthemum became a representative of the reclusive spirit, and literati through the ages often used poems about chrysanthemums to express the noble sentiment of not seeking fame and fortune and of holding fast to one's true heart.
From a botanical point of view, the chrysanthemum is a perennial herbaceous plant of the genus Chrysanthemum in the family Asteraceae. It is highly adaptable, cold-tolerant and light-loving, and prefers a cool climate. Its cultivated varieties are extremely rich, with flower colors covering several color series including yellow, white, purple and red, and with highly varied flower forms; it is one of the traditional famous flowers of China with a very long history of cultivation.
Besides its ornamental value, the chrysanthemum also has a very wide range of uses. The flowers can be brewed into chrysanthemum tea and can also be used in cooking and medicine, and folk customs still include admiring chrysanthemums and drinking chrysanthemum wine on the Double Ninth Festival. When growing chrysanthemums in pots at home, as long as you ensure sufficient light, pinch and prune them at the right time and avoid waterlogging in the potting soil, you can usually achieve fairly ideal flowering results.
