Crown of Thorns Can Bloom in Winter Too: Characteristics and Care Methods Explained in Detail
Crown of Thorns, also known as Iron Begonia or Kylin Flower, is a trailing shrub in the Euphorbiaceae family, named for the dense hard spines on its stems and its flowers that resemble plum blossoms. It is native to Madagascar in Africa, and today it is widely grown as a potted plant across our country, making it a very popular flowering ornamental. Despite its thorny branches, it is extremely eye-catching when in bloom, with bright red small bracts opening in pairs and standing out vividly among the green leaves.
Crown of Thorns has strong adaptability and prefers a warm, sunny, and relatively dry environment. It is drought-tolerant but hates waterlogging, and it also fears severe cold. As long as temperature and light are adequate, its flowering period can last a very long time, and especially when cared for properly indoors in winter, it can still bloom normally, which is one of the reasons it is so beloved by plant enthusiasts.
Caring for Crown of Thorns is not difficult. Normally it should be placed in a spot with plenty of light, as insufficient light easily leads to leggy growth and fewer flowers; watering should follow the principle of watering when dry and letting it dry between waterings, preferring dryness over moisture, and in winter even more attention should be paid to controlling water. A loose, breathable, well-draining sandy soil is best, and during the growing season a light application of diluted fertilizer can be given, while fertilization should stop during the low-temperature dormant period.
It should be noted that when the stems and leaves of Crown of Thorns are broken, they exude a white milky sap. This sap is irritating and may cause discomfort on contact with the skin, so it is best to wear gloves when pruning, and in daily life it should be placed out of reach of children and pets. As long as these details are attended to, Crown of Thorns can maintain good condition year-round and add a touch of brightness to the home.
