Flowerbed plants refer to the flowers used to plant flowerbeds, mainly annual and biennial herbaceous flowers, but also including some perennial flowers and foliage plants. Most of these plants have a compact habit, uniform height, abundant blooming and bright colors, and are relatively tolerant of pruning; they can form a mass of colorful scenery in a relatively short time, with an intuitively striking ornamental effect.

Among the common types, scarlet sage, marigold, petunia, zinnia, cockscomb and garden balsam are mostly used for summer and autumn flowerbeds; pansy, daisy and pot marigold are more cold-tolerant and are often used in spring; ornamental kale has rich leaf colors and is a common material for winter flowerbeds. Perennial flowers such as iris, daylily and hosta can also be planted in masses, and once planted they can be enjoyed for many years, making management relatively worry-free.

When arranging them, attention is paid to height pairing and color coordination; generally the taller types are planted in the middle or back rows, while the low-growing ones are set along the edges, forming layered patterns or color blocks. Parks, plazas, street median strips and courtyard entrances are all suitable for decorating with them, and holiday flower displays also mostly choose these plants, making them one of the faster-acting materials in urban greening.

In daily care, the vast majority of flowerbed plants like a sunny environment; long-term insufficient light easily leads to leggy growth and sparse flowering, which is also a common reason why flowerbed plants do not bloom or produce few flowers. During the growing period, keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, promptly remove spent flowers after blooming and apply appropriate supplementary fertilizer, which can noticeably extend the overall ornamental period. After seasonal flowers finish, seasonal varieties can be replanted so that the flowerbed has scenery to enjoy all year round.
