The African violet is a perennial evergreen herbaceous plant in the Gesneriaceae family, native to the mountain forest areas of eastern Africa, which is why it is also called the African violet. It has a compact form, with leaves growing from the base in a rosette arrangement, and its leaf surface is covered with fine downy hairs; it is a widely popular indoor potted flowering plant.

In horticulture, African violets come in a very rich range of varieties, with flower colors covering purple, blue, pink and white, and petals divided into single and double forms. By plant size, they are usually divided into standard, semi-miniature and miniature types, and leaf shape and color also differ noticeably among varieties, making it possible to meet different placement needs.

For African violet care, it is best to place it in bright, indirect light and avoid direct scorching sun, keeping the environment warm is sufficient, and attention should be paid to cold protection in winter. Watering should follow the principle of letting the soil dry before watering again, and try not to splash water onto the leaves so as to avoid leaving spots; during the growing season, a dilute liquid fertilizer can be added. It can also be propagated by leaf cuttings; inserting healthy leaves into a moist medium will allow them to take root and sprout.

Because of its compact form and tolerance of partial shade, and because it can bloom repeatedly when conditions are suitable, the African violet is very suitable for placement in indoor spaces such as windowsills and desks. It can both decorate the environment and let people enjoy the pleasure in the process of caring for it, making it a practical and elegant small flowering plant.
