Larkspur is an annual or biennial herbaceous plant in the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It gets its name because its flowers resemble a flying swallow with spread wings, and it is also known by other names such as qianniao cao. Its inflorescence is slender and upright, and its flower color is most commonly blue-purple, along with pink, white and other colors. It is highly ornamental and is often used for flower bed arrangements, courtyard accents and cut flower cultivation.

Larkspur prefers a cool environment with ample light. It has fairly good cold tolerance but does not tolerate high temperatures or waterlogging. When planting, it is best to choose fertile soil with good drainage, and keeping the soil slightly moist is usually sufficient; standing water easily causes root rot. During hot summer periods, appropriate shading and ventilation should be provided to prevent the plant from wilting.

For care, during the growing season fertilizer can be applied lightly and frequently, mainly nitrogen fertilizer to promote the growth of branches and leaves, and before budding and flowering, phosphorus and potassium fertilizer should be applied instead, which helps produce larger flowers and more vivid colors. Removing spent flowers promptly after blooming can reduce nutrient consumption, and some varieties may bloom again. Taller varieties should be given supports to prevent lodging that would spoil their ornamental value.

It should be noted that the entire larkspur plant contains toxic components, with the seeds being especially toxic. When growing it at home, avoid accidental ingestion, wash hands promptly after pruning, and keep children and pets well supervised. As long as the environment is suitable and management is proper, larkspur can adorn courtyards and balconies with its upright flower spikes and lively floral elegance.
