Colorful calla lilies come in a rich range of flower colors, and their everyday care is not difficult

The colorful calla lily is a perennial herbaceous plant in the genus Calla (Zantedeschia) of the family Araceae. It gets its name from the rich colors of its spathes; common flower colors include yellow, orange, red, pink and purple, and some cultivars also bear spots or gradient patterns. Its plant form is relatively compact, and the leaves are mostly arrow-shaped or lanceolate; some cultivars even have white markings on the leaf surface, giving the whole plant strong ornamental value.

Most colorful calla lilies on the market are horticultural hybrids, and by flower color they can be roughly divided into yellow series, orange series, red series and pink series, among others. Different cultivars differ slightly in plant height, flower shape and adaptability. When buying, pay attention to how plump the tubers are; tubers that are full and sturdy usually perform better when flowering.

In terms of care, colorful calla lilies like a warm, humid environment with plenty of light. The suitable growing temperature is roughly between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, and in winter you need to keep them warm and protect them from the cold. For cultivation, choose loose, fertile soil with good drainage. During the growing period, keep the potting soil moist but not waterlogged, so the tubers do not rot. Around bud formation and flowering, you can appropriately supplement with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer; after flowering, gradually reduce watering, and once the plant enters dormancy, store the tubers in a cool, dry place.

Note that the sap of colorful calla lilies contains irritating substances, so it is best to wear gloves when pruning or repotting, and if there are young children or pets at home, place the plant where they cannot easily reach it. If problems such as failure to bloom or yellowing leaves occur, they are mostly related to insufficient light, improper watering or unsuitable temperature, and adjusting the care method promptly will usually solve them. With its brilliant flower colors and elegant flower shape, it is very suitable for placing on balconies, windowsills and living rooms, and can also be cut as a cut flower to decorate the home.
