Avocado cultivation is now fairly widespread, and as we all know this fruit is also quite popular, but did you know? Its seed can be turned into tableware. How does that work? Let's take a look!

In recent years, more and more people have come to love eating avocados, but you would never guess that the avocado seed, besides being used for planting, has other uses. This Mexican company, taking advantage of the fact that avocado seed material degrades faster than plastic, has launched bioplastic tableware made from avocado seeds, hoping to replace today's plastic tableware!

The founder of the Mexican company, Scott Mungía, graduated in chemical engineering, and while at school he spent more than 3 years in his spare time researching avocado seeds, and found that avocado seed material degrades much faster than plastic. So he tried converting avocado seeds into bioplastics, and after obtaining a patent named it "Avoplast". Tableware made from Avoplast looks like ordinary disposable plastic tableware, yet it can fully decompose in as little as 240 days, making it far more eco-friendly than plastic tableware.

At present, "Avoplast" has launched knives and forks, spoons and drinking straws, which can be kept for a year as long as they are stored in a dry place. "Avoplast" products are mainly sold in Latin America, but everyone can also buy them on the official website. US$9.89 (about HK$77) buys 150 Avoplast drinking straws, averaging about HK$0.5 each; US$7.49 (about HK$58) buys 24 pieces of Avoplast tableware, averaging HK$2.5 each, which is not particularly expensive. Friends who are interested might as well get some and show their support!
