Guide: Koi vertical scale disease is also called pine cone disease or standing scale disease

Symptoms of koi vertical scale disease

The symptoms of this koi disease are characterized by a rough body surface; most of the scales on the tail area open outward like pine cones, and the scale sacs at the base of the scales become edematous, with translucent or blood-containing exudate accumulating inside, causing the scales to stand up. When slight pressure is applied to the scales, liquid-containing material squirts out from the scale sacs, and the scales then fall off. Sometimes it is accompanied by congestion at the fin base and on the skin surface, protruding eyeballs, abdominal swelling, and other symptoms. Diseased fish sink to the bottom or lose balance and swim sluggishly, have difficulty breathing, turn sideways with the abdomen upward, and die after 2~3 days.

Causes of koi vertical scale disease

Vertical scale disease is caused by Pseudomonas punctata (PSEUDOMONAS PUNCTATA), and mainly affects larger koi. The epidemic season is from late autumn each year to the following spring, when water temperatures are lower. The disease is more likely when water quality is unclean, light is insufficient, oxygen in the water is low, the rearing water temperature is too high, and when the fish body scales are scratched, so good maintenance of the water quality for raising koi should be done. This disease is difficult to cure, and even after cure, the color, luster, and body shape are not as good as before.

Chongqing Yumen Koi teaches you how to prevent koi vertical scale disease

(1) Prevent injury to the fish body.

(2) The broodfish spawning pond should be dried in winter and disinfected with quicklime or bleaching powder.

(3) Add 5% crude chlortetracycline or oxytetracycline to the feed and feed it.

(4) Use vitamin E orally. For every 10KG of fish body weight, use 0.3~0.6G per day for long-term use; when diseased, increase it to 0.6~0.9G (for 10~15 consecutive days) as an auxiliary therapeutic drug.

Treatment of koi vertical scale disease

(1) Same as for inflammatory congestion disease; combining with saltwater immersion will give a better effect.

(2) Dissolve 3-5 tubes of gentamicin in 10 kilograms of water, and soak the diseased fish for 10-15 minutes. Or choose 2% saltwater or 3% sodium bicarbonate solution, and soak the diseased fish for 10-15 minutes.

(3) Dissolve 1 gram of nitrofurazone in 10 kilograms of water, and soak the diseased fish for 20-30 minutes.

(4) Prepare potassium permanganate in water, using a dark-colored water as the standard, and use the fish body's tolerance as the standard for soaking time. After soaking, place the fish in clean water to rinse, then apply nitrofurazone dry powder to the affected area. After several treatments, the area of loose scales gradually shrinks, and finally it can heal.
