Rare Wild Single-Leaf Clematis Appears in Zhoushan Town, Yongkang, with More Than 200 Flowers on a Single Plant
Single-leaf clematis is a provincially key protected plant that blooms only in winter and is also called "snow bloom".Recently, a provincial forestry local expert discovered a rare wild single-leaf clematis in Zhoushan Town, Yongkang City, and it produced200 more flowers, which is truly rare.

Single-leaf clematis is a perennial herbaceous vine of the class Dicotyledoneae, family Ranunculaceae.
The morphological characteristics of single-leaf clematis are generally that the lower part of the main root swells into a tuberous or sweet-potato-like form, 1.5 - 2 cm thick, with a pale brown surface and a white interior. The leaves are simple, ovate-lanceolate, 10 - 15 cm long and 3 - 7.5 cm wide, with an acuminate apex, a shallowly cordate base, and shallow spiny-tipped teeth along the margin. The cyme is axillary, usually with only 1 flower, rarely 2 - 5 flowers; the flower is bell-shaped, 2 - 2.5 cm in diameter, with 4 rather thick sepals, white or pale yellow.

It often grows by streams, in valleys, on shady damp slopes, under forests and in thickets, twining around trees. It prefers places with ample sunlight and abundant rain, and a rolling mountain ecological environment is suitable for its reproduction. It is cold-tolerant and drought-tolerant, relatively fond of light but not tolerant of summer heat and strong light, and prefers deep, fertile, well-drained alkaline loam and light sandy loam.
It is distributed in eastern Shandong, eastern Liaoning, as well as Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangsu and other places in China, and is also distributed in Japan and Korea.

What is special about this wild single-leaf clematis is not only its rarity, but also its jaw-dropping number of flowers. Usually, the number of flowers on a single single-leaf clematis plant is around several dozen, but this one discovered this time actually produced 200 more flowers.
The number of flowers produced by single-leaf clematis is even scarcer than that of ordinary clematis. In the natural environment, single-leaf clematis with axillary cymes usually has only 1 flower, and only in extremely suitable environments can it produce 2 - 5 flowers. The situation of a single plant producing 200 more flowers discovered this time in Zhoushan Town, Yongkang, is very rare in the growth history of single-leaf clematis.

Although last year was a warm winter, during the flowering period of the single-leaf clematis, the temperature dropped sharply; this change in temperature may have played a certain stimulating role in its flowering. At the same time, the local rolling mountain terrain and the comprehensive ecological environment are suitable for its flowering.
In addition, the discovery site east of Fangshankou Village in Zhoushan Town may possess ideal conditions for the growth and flowering of single-leaf clematis, such as fertile soil, good drainage, ample sunlight, and a suitable shaded environment, providing sufficient nutrients and a good environmental foundation for its growth and flower bud differentiation.

Previously, wild single-leaf clematis had only been found in Dahan Mountain in Yongkang City. This time the provincial forestry local expert discovered single-leaf clematis with more than 200 flowers on a single plant in Zhoushan Town, which is an important supplement to the city's plant diversity and further enriches the local plant species and distribution information.
It also provides new samples and cases for botanists studying the growth habits, reproductive patterns, and ecological adaptability of single-leaf clematis, helps to deepen understanding of the growth characteristics and survival strategies of this species under specific environments, and also has certain reference value for studying the evolution and ecological changes of Clematis plants.
