How do you prevent hollow orchid roots?

When we repot or change the potting mix for orchids, we often find the phenomenon of hollow orchid roots. How can this be prevented? Below are two small methods for everyone.

1. To prevent hollow orchid roots, watering must be done properly, avoiding "half-way water." Watering orchids is a basic skill in orchid cultivation, and also a difficult problem that is not easy to master. The difficulty lies in watering not penetrating thoroughly, resulting in the "half-way water" phenomenon. The so-called "half-way water" refers to the upper half of the orchid pot's growing medium being moderately moist, while the lower part is dry. This is the crux of the problem that causes hollow orchid roots. There are two methods to eliminate this phenomenon: First, water orchids by repeatedly watering several times, and do not stop watering just because water flows out from the bottom of the orchid pot. In fact, sometimes when you water the orchid only slightly, water flows out from the bottom of the pot, but the internal growing medium is still dry. Therefore, water repeatedly several times to ensure the growing medium is moist. Second, use the "sitting pot" (soaking pot) method for watering. That is, place the orchid pot in a container filled with water, so that the surface height of the potting soil is basically level with the water surface height in the container, allowing water to slowly soak upward from the bottom of the pot to moisten the growing medium. This method provides even watering.

2. To prevent hollow orchid roots, the growing medium must be mixed evenly to ensure the potting soil contacts the orchid roots. An ancient manual says, "If one root does not touch the soil, that root will become hollow." This is truly a saying born of experience. Practice has proven that if the potting soil does not contact the orchid roots well, over time the orchid roots will be suspended and lose water, and hollow roots will certainly appear. Based on this, orchid growers must mix the growing medium evenly when planting orchids, adding it in order of large, medium, and small particles. Each time a layer of growing medium is added, gently pat the pot wall to make the potting soil contact the orchid roots. After potting, use the "sitting pot" (soaking pot) method to water thoroughly; this further increases the contact surface between the orchid roots and the growing medium. Afterward, bring it into daily management. If managed properly, it can effectively prevent hollow orchid roots from occurring.

To prevent hollow orchid roots, pay attention to the two methods described above.
