Detailed Guide to Caring for White Jade Orchid (Michelia alba) During Peak Bloom
The blooming season of White Jade Orchid (Michelia alba) generally falls between July and September. During this period, improper care can cause leaves to wither and even the whole plant to die, while good care will result in lush branches and continuous blooming. So, how should White Jade Orchid be cared for during peak bloom?
1. Light should be soft. White Jade Orchid loves light. In summer, it can be placed under a shaded flower shed. In the morning, open the curtain to let it receive sunlight; after 9 o'clock, cover it well to block the sunlight, and especially avoid direct exposure to strong midday sun.
2. Water frequently. White Jade Orchid loves moisture. In summer, water it often, giving one thorough watering each morning and evening. On days with high temperatures, also spray water twice on the leaves and surrounding area in the morning and afternoon to increase humidity. Because its roots are fleshy roots and fear waterlogging, water less or not at all on rainy days. If it gets drenched by rain, pay timely attention to drainage in the pot to prevent the roots from rotting from soaking, which can cause the whole plant to die. Because White Jade Orchid is a typical acid-loving flower and fears alkalinity, and water in the north is relatively alkaline, long-term use can easily cause leaves to yellow and drop, so when watering, alternately use stored rainwater, or water with ferrous sulfate solution.
3. Fertilizer should be generous. During the growing period, White Jade Orchid loves heavy fertilizer and heavy watering. Not only should it be watered well, it should also be fertilized well. Use liquid fertilizer for fertilization. Mix horse hoof pieces, sesame paste, and ferrous sulfate in a ratio of 1:1:0.5, soak in water for one week, and after fermentation, dilute with clean water and apply once every 5 days for better results; the leaves will be broad and thick, and the flowers will be richly fragrant.
4. Prevent pests well. In summer, White Jade Orchid is susceptible to red spider mites. Usually spray water on the leaf surface and the plant more often to increase humidity and prevent pest outbreaks. If an outbreak occurs and the number is small, use a sprayer to spray clean water to wash the leaves. If there are many pests, spray 20% dicofol emulsifiable concentrate at 1000 times dilution to eliminate them.
