What soil type is most suitable for cultivating orchids?
Orchids require a loose, well-drained, humus-rich, slightly acidic soil. This reflects the ecological habits orchids developed in ancient times when they grew on the leaf litter layer beneath forest trees. Conversely, if the soil is compacted, drains poorly, and has a low humus content, the normal growth and development of the fleshy roots will be affected. There may be a lack of sufficient nutrients, or poor drainage may impair root respiration and even cause root rot. The ideal soil pH is around 6.0-6.5. Based on these habits that orchids require of the soil, growing media that meet the above requirements are now generally used to replace traditional potting soil. All have achieved ideal results.
