What should be noted when dividing orchids?

Orchids can be divided once they have grown to a certain extent. This not only benefits the growth of the orchids but also gives you more plants. So what should be noted when dividing orchids?

1. The proper time for dividing orchids

If the orchids grow smoothly, after a period of time the roots will become very lush, and may even become tangled and intertwined in the pot. So they must be divided or repotted. The timing for dividing and repotting is spring and autumn.

2. Note the method of dividing orchids

When dividing a large orchid pot, you should try to keep three plants or more per pot. If you want flowers every year, you should divide the five plants with young seedlings into one pot. As for old plants, it is not advisable to use the method of dividing two or three plants per pot, otherwise it will be impossible for every old plant to grow young seedlings; dividing one plant per pot is appropriate. For old plants without leaves, two should also be divided into one pot, wrapped with water moss, and left to wait quietly for sprouting.

3. Order of dividing orchids

(1) First tap the edge of the pot to loosen the potting material.

(2) Carefully and gently pull out the orchid plant; do not use too much force when pulling.

(3) Thoroughly remove all the old potting material, being careful not to damage the orchid roots.

(4) Use a used knife to cut off rotten roots and overly dense roots.

(5) Divide into an appropriate number of plants, and place coarse potting material in the bottom of the pot.

(6) Insert finer potting material on top; be careful and cautious when inserting it.

(7) After inserting the fine potting material on top, cover the surface with water moss.

(8) After covering with water moss, use a shower head to water from top to bottom.

(9) After watering, leave them for a period of time, then place them on a suitable orchid shelf.
