How to prune orchids so they look beautiful

In the eyes of many gardening friends, the orchid is a plant that is rather delicate to grow, yet its leaves are plain and quiet, and its flowers are elegant and noble, which fits perfectly with Chinese aesthetic ideals. Moreover, the orchid is one of the Four Gentlemen among traditional flowering plants, and it also has good medicinal properties, so keeping a potted orchid at home is very practical.

But in the process of growing orchids, we usually need to prune them regularly, so as to encourage them to bloom better. However, pruning also needs to follow certain rules; you must never just cut away blindly. So, for an orchid grown in a pot, which parts should be pruned?

The main targets for pruning a potted orchid are yellowed and withered leaves, old, weak, diseased or damaged roots, and the stems left behind after the flowers fade. These all need to be cut off in time to prevent these problem leaves, flowers and roots from competing for and consuming large amounts of nutrients. This can easily lead to the plant not being supplied with enough nutrients in time for growth, causing the overall vigor of the plant to weaken.

Before cutting, we need to use alcohol to strictly sterilize the scissors, then hold the scissors at a slight angle, and finally slowly cut away these problem parts. Note that the cut on the leaf should be a little closer to the leaf tip, so that after pruning the leaf can remain green overall, and at the same time the potted plant looks neater and more balanced.

Of course, after pruning the leaves, to ensure the plant maintains good vigor, we also need to give the potted orchid proper care and management. This usually requires sufficient light, scientific watering, and the use of a special organic nutrient solution. Only after the plant has obtained sufficient nutrients can it often produce more beautiful flowers, and only then does such a potted orchid look better.
